Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Sipping my pint, in total relaxation mode, I strike up a conversation with a couple, Amanda and John, who were off to Portugal for a holiday and as we exchanged stories we became very comfortable in each others’ company. Curious how that can happen cocooned as we were in an airport. We agreed to let each other know how we got on when we got back. I had not replaced my camera that had also been lost in the theft of my stuff and they offered to lend me a small camera for my trip. Vowing to meet up again we went our separate ways.
I love air trips. They are a real beginning to an adventure and excitement builds as you go.
I was sitting on the plane beside a couple who had 2 kids with them and who were off to Alaska for 2 years to ‘give it a try’. He was a carpentry instructor in a semi-state body in Dublin. A nice cosy number I would have thought. But he was giving all that up to try for adventure in Alaska. That is brave in my view. Lots had said I was brave. But these were taking themselves off into the wide blue yonder, not knowing if they would be back. That’s brave! Again, we promised to keep in touch.
Landing in Canada was a shock. I never had been this far away from home before and I was excited, not apprehensive. Which was and continues to be, a surprise to me.
I had my hotel organised now the only thing was to get there. My cabbie was an Egyptian. He wasn’t sure where we were going and was in continuous contact with his depot looking for directions. I had given him the address but for some reason that was not enough for him to get me there. He got so frustrated he began to blame me because he didn’t know where he was going. I was tired and irritable now and do not suffer fools gladly in those circumstances. We had a bit of a ‘discussion’ about it. Along the lines that he was the cabbie from Vancouver! Not me! Once we sorted that out, all was OK and he eventually found his way! Tip less!
