Chapter 4
Chapter 4
In Vancouver
I got checked into my hotel in Vancouver to get my bearings and sort out my limited amount of gear. I had sussed out my bike shop before I left home and had decided pretty much on what I needed. I had decided on a Cannondale Tourer 1 bike and some Ortlieb pannier bags. 2 front, 2 rear and a barbag that would carry all the essentials I would need to draw on during the day. I headed for the bike shop to put faces to names I had spoken to in the last few weeks. Got the bike fitted to suit my frame, fitted with the panniers ,mudguards and lights, bags and locks. Ill post a picture tomorrow so you can see what I’ll have for company these next few weeks.
It rained this morning and it was nice to feel Canadian rain on my face. It is about the same temperature as home. Although warmer this afternoon. I'm hoping that by starting in September that as I travel south the mean temperature will lessen in the States and so will stay pretty much the same for me. If that makes sense.
Big city this. Lots of traffic and lights and they all drive on the wrong side of the road. Any wonder its mad on the roads. I'm going out to sample the delights of the city cycle lanes tomorrow. Keep you posted.
The hotel is comfortable, my needs at this point are not great. I am tired now and only wish to settle myself in for the next few days to get acclimatised.
I found a nice restaurant, The Bottle Tipper, opposite the hotel which would be my eating place of choice for the next few days. The Bottle Tipper was always pleasant and welcoming. Thomas, the owner, and I became quite good friends as the week progressed, sampling as I was the delights of breakfast and dinner.
The guys in the bike shop were very helpful too. A bit awe-struck at my journey ahead and did everything to make sure I was well kitted out for every eventuality. I spent some time getting Loretta (I had to name her seeing we were to spend the next few weeks together and Loretta seemed appropriate) fitted out with Pannier bags, Mudguards, lights, and locks. She was essentially going to be my ‘house’ for the next 2 months . So I had to make sure she and I were well equipped for the journey.
When we were all satisfied that I was ready and kitted. I set out on my new Canondale Tourer 1 to make my way back to the hotel. My first experience of riding in another country. Exciting and exhilarating.
